In April of 2021, I began an exciting position as part of a design team at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Our team consisted of five contracted designers and was led by two School of Visual Art and Design (SVAD) professors. In this eight-week-long internship, we worked directly with NBA athlete Jonathan Isaac and his agent to develop a solid brand and line of products for Isaac all centered around the release of his signature sneaker. Isaac told us to draw inspiration from the biblical story of the Lion of Judah. Isaac has always identified with this character and wanted the strength and resilience of the tale to be conveyed visually in the shoes design. Our team met weekly to present our designs to Jonathan. After initial concepts were selected, our team worked diligently to design an identity system, sneaker model base, colorways, packaging, merchandise, promotional graphics, custom illustrations, and a full set of brand guidelines. I was fortunate enough to have my original shoe design selected by Isaac to be the starting point for the shoe design. After many changes and improvements were implemented by myself and the rest of the team we ended up with a shoe design and brand that reflected all of our creativity and excited our client.
